    The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at  San José State University in downtown San José, California. These facilities include the Diaz  Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center, and the Spartan  Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs  Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority,  faculty, and administrators.

    Job Summary 
    The Audio Visual Technician is responsible for the first point of contact for clients and guests in  an event space. They perform services such as the setup, operation, and strike of event spaces,  audio, lighting, video, staging, electrical and/or other technical equipment, and provides high  quality, efficient, and effective production of events within SU Facilities and other indoor/outdoor campus locations. Under direct supervision of the Assistant Manager, performs  AV technical services and maintenance as assigned.
     

     

    Essential Functions and Tasks 

     
    • Provides AV support, services and resources including but not limited to set up, strike,  and operation of audio, lighting, video, staging, electrical, and/or other technical equipment. 
    • Supervises use of SU audio visual technical equipment by campus or outside groups  during events. 
    • Assists clients, guests, and/or other SU staff in operation of audiovisual systems.  
    • Assists in maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of technical systems and equipment.
    • Assists in training of other Audio-Visual Technicians and/or other SU staff in the operation of technical systems, including safety, and in monitoring of performance. 
    • Assist Student Union Event Services team members in supporting all special event  programs and services
    • Assist SU Operations team in the implementation of the protocols for safety, security  building patrons during SU building events. 
    • Participates in meetings as needed for the purpose of conveying and gathering information required to perform job functions. 
    • Assist the Director of Facilities to report maintenance concerns and damage to equipment  and resources. 
    • Works with SUI Student Success and Assessment team to ensures learning outcomes are  developed and assessed annually for the student staff.
    • Performs additional job-related duties as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) 

     
    • Basic understanding of sound, lighting, and video systems. 
    • Basic understanding of electricity, including electrical theory and safety.
    • Basic understanding of staging and rigging principles and safety procedures. 
    • Basic computer skills and basic understanding of Microsoft Office preferred. 
    • Maintains professional attitude and conduct at all times as a customer service example for  event clients and guests, and for other Event Services and Student Union staff.  
    • Ability to rapidly acquire and develop skills and an ability to follow directions. 
    • Good verbal and written communication skills and ability to prepare written reports as  necessary. 
    • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and judgements that will reflect positively on the  Student Union.  
    • Ability to work with little or no supervision and ability to direct the work of others.
    • Working knowledge of SU policies and procedures and familiarity with Occupational  Health and Safety. 
    • Experience in computer applications such as: Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets,  Forms, etc.) Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). 
     

    Physical Demands and Work Environment 

     
    • The position works in a wide variety of environments including both a typical office as  well as an outdoors and indoor facility program-oriented environment.  
    • The physical demands of this position are described below 
      • Sitting, walking, and standing for extended periods of time.  
      • Twisting, bending, climbing, pulling, pushing, squatting, crawling, kneeling, balancing, reaching, and coordination (eye, hand, foot). 
      • Fall (Slip, Trip) Conditions that result in falls (impacts) from height or traditional  walking and playing surfaces.  
      • Physical ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects frequently 10-25lbs,  occasionally 26-50lbs.  
      • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone. 
      • Frequently works in noisy environments. 
      • Dexterity of hands, fingers, and wrist to operate a computer keyboard and  calculator 
    • The postion works a schedule based on business needs 7 a.m. - 11 p.m, Monday - Friday, will work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including long and/or irregular hours

    Minimum Qualifications  

     
    • Requires an Associate of Arts, Science or General Studies degree with a minimum of  1 year of experience in technician role and responsible for technical assignments. 
    • 1-2 years’ experience in customer service-based environment. 
    • Current CPR/First Aid and AED certifications required or must be obtained within the  first month of employment.  
    • A strong ear for sound variants and technical aptitude. 
    • Scissor and Fork/High Lift certification. during first six months of employment. 
     

    Preferred Qualifications 

     
    • Bachelor’s degree with 1-2 years previous experience with live event production strongly  preferred 
    • Advanced knowledge of AV services and technical application of equipment. 
    • 2 years’ experience in customer service-based environment.

    Background Check and Fingerprinting 
    Student Union employees are required to undergo and completed a successful background check  that includes verification of employment and education, as well as a check of criminal records  for employment.
